Ronald Pickup was born in Chester, England in 1940. He graduated from Royal School, then the University of Leeds, and then spent two years in London, studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

His first professional job after graduating from CADI was a small role in the DR series. WHO. He made his stage debut at the Leicester Rep Theater in 1964

In London, Ronald played for the first time at the Royal Court Theater directed by Julius Caesar, directed by Lindsay Anderson. This was soon followed by a series of productions at the Royal Court (1964-66) under the artistic direction of director William Gaskill: Shelley, Saved, Sergeant Musgrave's Dance.

This was followed by seven years at the National Theater (1966-73) under the direction of Sir Laurence Olivier. He has starred in Juno and the Peacock, Love for Love, Much Ado About Nothing, Three Sisters, in Peter Brooks's production of Oedipus, in a purely male production As You Like It.

On television, he has been seen in the films and series Orwell on Jura (BAFTA nomination for Best Actor), Jenny.

His many radio credits include Wordsworth's Prelude, Byron's Don Juan, Reynard the Fox, A Winter's Tale, Hamlet, The Awful Insulation of Rage (Sony Awarded Best Actor ").
