Rossdale was born in Kilburn, London. His father, Douglas Rossdale, was of Russian Jewish origin with the surname Rosenthal. He parted ways with Gavin's mother, Scottish Barbara Stefan, when his son was 11 years old. Subsequently, Barbara remarried and left for Florida. Gavin was raised by his father and aunt. Gavin had two sisters - the older Lorraine and the younger Soraya. Rossdale's half-brother, David Rossdale, is Bishop of Greensby (an abbey in the Diocese of Lincoln).
Rossdale began learning to play bass after meeting his sister's boyfriend, Lorraine, who played in The Nobodyz, but Gavin soon switched to rhythm guitar. At the age of 17, he graduated from one of the most prestigious educational centers in England, Westminster School and created the group Midnight (later Little Dukes), which became famous thanks to several singles and many photographs. In 1991, Gavin Rossdale went to Los Angeles for 6 months, where he interrupted as best he could, took a part-time job, was an assistant video director. He spent a lot of time in New York before returning to England.
In England, Gavin contacts Dave Dorell (from MARRS), his future manager, whom he met in Los Angeles. In 1992 Rossdale formed Future Primitive, which included Nigel Pulsford, Dave Parsons and Robin Goodridge. In 1994 after the release of the band's debut album Sixteen Stone, the band changed its name to Bush.
