Born Benedict in Silver City, New Mexico, the son of journalist Alma Marie Benedict (Loring) and Dr. Michtell M. Benedict. Paul grew up in Massachusetts. As a young man, he suffered from acromegaly, a disorder of the pituitary gland that affects the limbs and face. It was because of this disease that his jaw was slightly enlarged and his nose was rather large.

Benedict is best known for his role as Harry Bentley on the Jeffersons TV show. Paul played this role from the beginning of the series in 1975 until 1981 ^; then he returned in 1983 and did not leave the project until its very end in 1985.

In the 1977 film 'The Goodbye Girl', starring Richard Dreyfus, Benedict played the director of the play 'Richard III', in which the role of Richard was played by an absolutely stereotypical homosexual. In 1990, in the film 'The Freshman', he played a film school professor who taught with the main character - the character Matthew Broderick.

On December 1, 2008, Benedict was found dead at his home in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. At the time of his death, he was seventy years old.

In 2009, Paul Benedict was awarded - posthumously - the Eliot Norton Prize. The award was presented to the late actor by decision of the Boston Theater Critics Association.
