William Windom is an American actor best known for his roles in such films as To Kill a Mockingbird, Sommersby, Miracle on 34th Street.
William Windom was born on September 28, 1923 in New York in the family of Isabelle and architect Paul Windom. William was named after his great-grandfather, the US Treasury Secretary. Windom was a student at Williams College as well as the University of Kentucky. Thereafter, he served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II as a paratrooper in the 588th Parachute Regiment and 82nd Airborne Division. After the war, William attended Fordham and Columbia Universities in New York City before settling on an acting career. Windom trained at the American Repertory Theater from 1946 to 1961.
On the big screen, William made his debut in 1962 in the drama To Kill a Mockingbird. And soon there were such films with William Wind as Americanization of Emily, Deadly Target, Merry Country, Hour of Arms, Silkworm, Fool's Parade, Echoes of Summer, She's Having a Child, Prisoner, Real Crime, Dopamine, Yesterday's Dreams.
Windom was an ardent fan of the game of chess and has achieved considerable success in this field. William bought a small island in Windom, Minnesota, named after his great-grandfather. In addition, he owned seven small boats, with which he won many trophies in sailing competitions.
Wind was married five times, his last wife was the writer Patricia Veronica Tunden, with whom they lived for thirty-six years.
