February 14, 1894 - December 26, 1974 - American comedian, radio, film and television actor, violinist. Considered the leading American entertainer of the 20th century. Benny's most famous character is a tight-fisted violinist with poor command of the instrument. Regardless of Benny's age, his character was always 39 years old.
Benny was known for his outstanding sense of the moment and his ability to elicit laughter with a meaningful pause or short expression, such as his trademark exclamation "Well!" His radio and television broadcasts, which were popular from 1930 to 1960, strongly influenced the sitcom genre.
