September 9, 1873, Baden, Austria - October 31, 1943, New York, USA - Austrian director, actor and theatrical figure who, from 1905 until the Nazis came to power in 1933, headed the German Theater in Berlin. Maximilian Goldmann (pseudonym Max Reinhardt appeared in 1904) was born in Baden near Vienna, into a Jewish family. His father, the manufacturer Wilhelm Goldman (1846-1911), came from Stupava; mother, Rosa Vengraf (1851-1924), was a native of Nicholsburg.
In 1920 he organized the first Salzburg Festival. After the Anschluss, he worked in the United States, where he directed, in particular, the film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Like Edward Gordon Craig, Reinhardt gravitated towards neo-romanticism and symbolism. He went down in the history of the performing arts as an innovator of theatrical technique: among his favorite techniques is a rotating stage, the transfer of the proscenium to the auditorium, the abandonment of the ramp separating the actors and the audience.
