During her film career, she starred in 25 films from 1938 to 1957. In 1938, 20th Century Fox director Bruce Humberstone accidentally saw Whelan working as a manicurist in a hairdresser. After the screen test, the studio signed a contract with her for one of the main female roles in the film adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Kidnapped (1938).
