Cotto, businessman. Abraham Cotto emigrated to the United States from Cameroon in the 1920s. His birth name was Njoki Manga Bell. In his autobiographical book, Royalty, referring to his father, Japhet Cotto claims that his great-grandfather (Abraham's grandfather), Alexander Bell, practiced Judaism and ruled the Douala region of Cameroon at the end of the 19th century, being heir to the throne. There he also writes about his descent from Queen Victoria. These claims are not corroborated by other sources.
Cotto studied acting from the age of 16 at Actor's Mobile Theater Studio, and has played in theater since the age of nineteen. His debut was the role of Othello. Started to act in films in 1963.
In 1973 he became the main villain (the role of Mr. Big) in the eighth James Bond film - "Live and Let Die". In 1979 he appeared in the science fiction film Alien .
In the television series Slaughter Department, Cotto played Lieutenant Al Giardello (Gee), the head of the department. Giardello is somewhat similar to the actor himself: he is the son of an Italian and an African-American woman, reflecting on his complex origins. In one episode, he recalls the Negro riots in Baltimore in the 1960s and the choices he had to make. Between supporting protesters and serving in the police, he chose the police. Japhet Cotto was married three times. He last married in 1998, and now he and his wife live in Baltimore. He has five children in total. The eldest son Fredrik is a police officer in San Jose, California.
