Father - lawyer, mother - daughter of the cantor of the main Cologne synagogue. In 1939, the family fled Nazism to Great Britain. Many of their relatives who remained in Germany died in Nazi concentration camps, later Ruth's father committed suicide (1948).

In 1948, Ruth was granted British citizenship. Graduated from the University of London in 1951. In the same year she married the Indian architect Cyrus Jhabwala, took his last name and left with him to India, where she lived until 1975. Then she settled in New York, in 1986 she received US citizenship.

Since the beginning of the 1950s she began to write prose, her first novel was published in 1955.Since the 1960s, she is associated with the creative tandem of film director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant, she wrote more than 20 screenplays for them, including based on her own novels. made adaptations of novels by Henry James and other English-language writers. She also collaborated with other directors.

Most of her novels are based on the problem of meeting and mutual understanding between the West and the East.
