February 7, 1930, London, England, United Kingdom - May 2, 2015, London, England, United Kingdom, full name: Ruth Barbara Rendell, Baroness Rendell of Baberg is a British writer, author of popular detective stories and thrillers.

Her mother was born in Sweden, grew up in Denmark, at the age of fourteen, without knowing the language, she came with her family to England. The attitude towards foreigners in the country in those years was difficult. Ruth's father, Arthur Greismann, was an Englishman. His mother refused to attend her son's wedding with a foreigner. Subsequently, these difficult family relationships were reflected in the works of the writer. During World War II, many treated her mother as German, although by then she spoke impeccable English. She managed to instill a love of language in her daughter. Mother died when Ruth was twelve years old. Ruth adored her father who raised her and, over the years, endowed some of him with the traits of her most famous character, Inspector Reginald Wexford.

Ruth attended Loughton High School in Essex, spent vacations in Scandinavia, and learned Swedish and Danish. After leaving school, from 1948 to 1952 she worked as a newspaper reporter and associate editor for the East Essex newspaper. In 1950, Ruth married journalist Donald Rendell. Their only son, Simon, was born in 1953. At that time, the young couple lived in a small rented cottage without a bathroom. In 1963, Rendell's first novel was published. When fame came, the family settled in an old farmhouse in Suffolk, where most of the writer's novels take place. The couple divorced in 1975, but Ruth married Donald again in 1977. In 1999, Donald Rendell died of cancer.

In 1996, for her significant contribution to the art, Ruth Rendell received the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire, in 1997 she received the title of Baroness and was a member of the House of Lords from Labor.

The writer lived in a house in Little Venice in west London. She was engaged in charitable activities. The author's latest novel, Dark Corners, was due out in October 2015.

On January 7, 2015, Ruth Rendell suffered a stroke.

Ruth has written over 60 novels and several storybooks.

She also wrote under the pseudonym Barbara Vine.

Ruth Rendell is the recipient of many literary awards, including several "daggers" (a silver, three gold, and diamond Cartier dagger) from the Crime Writers Association, The Sunday Times Prize for Literary Excellence and the Edgar Poe Awards (like Barbara Vine).

Life Member of the House of Lords from the Labor Party. Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1996), Baroness.
