Pons began her musical career as a pianist, graduating from the Paris Conservatory at the age of fifteen. Possessing a good voice, during the First World War, Pons performed in hospitals with concerts not only as a pianist, but also as a singer. On the advice of Dina Beumer, she began to take singing lessons from Alberti de Gorostyaga in Paris.
Pons made her operatic debut in 1928 in Mulhouse, where she sang the part of Lakme in the opera of the same name by Delibes, and during the following years she performed on the stages of French provincial opera houses. In 1930, the impresario Giovanni Zenatello invited her to the United States, where she was accepted into the Metropolitan Opera troupe to replace Amelita Galli-Curci, who had left the stage. Pons's debut at the Metropolitan Opera took place on January 3, 1931 in Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor. This performance caused a sensation among the public and critics, and over the next 28 years (until the end of her singing career) Pons sang in more than 300 performances at the Metropolitan. Pons toured extensively in Europe and South America, recorded and starred in opera films. Buried in the Cannes cemetery Grande Jas.
