June 11, 1889 - January 8, 1972 - American silent film actor, film director, screenwriter and producer. Born in Los Angeles, he was the younger brother of actor Charles Ruggles. He began his career as a silent film actor in 1915, appearing in several dozen silent films, including several films with Charlie Chaplin ("Triple Trouble", "Behind the Screen", "The Moneylender's Shop", "Department Store Controller"). Since 1917 he began to engage in directing. Has directed a total of about 50 films, including one of the film versions of the novel by Edith Wharton "The Age of Innocence", most of which did not attract the attention of the public and critics. In 1931 he directed Cimarron, a film adaptation of Edna Ferber's novel about American settlers on the Oklahoma prairie, which became the first Western to win an American Film Academy Award for Best Picture. Although he partly developed his success, directed the light comedy Difficult Man (1932) with Clark Gable and Carol Lombard in the lead roles, the comedy I'm Not an Angel (1933) with Mae West and Carrie Grant in the lead roles, The School of Humor (1933) with Bing Crosby and Balero (1934) with Jroj Raft and Carol Lombard, subsequent films were less successful with the exception of Arizona (1940). His career began to decline when in 1946 he signed a contract with the "Rank Organization" film company, for which he directed and produced the film City of London (1941) with the participation of actors Syd Field and Petula Clark. The film became the first British musical film in the Technicolor system. However, the film drew a barrage of criticism and failed at the box office. This was his last film work. The director died in 1972 in Santa Monica, and is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, California.
