September 19, 1900, Vienna, Austria-Hungary (Austria) - April 28, 1977, New York, real name Jacob Krantz (Jacob Krantz) - American actor.

Prior to his film career, Krantz was an amateur boxer and a Wall Street broker. Due to the popularity of the "Latin lovers" of that era (Rudolph Valentino, Ramon Novarro and Antonio Moreno), Hollywood producers changed the actor's name from Kranz to Cortez. The actor has played in over 100 films. In 1930, he played private detective Sam Spade in Montana Month, opposite Joan Crawford.

In 1931, Cortez played Spade again in the pre-codex detective film The Maltese Falcon. In 1934, Ricardo Cortez starred in the adaptation of the Broadway musical Wonder Bar, opposite Al Jolson and Dolores del Rio. In 1936, the actor played the role of Perry Mason in The Case of the Black Cat, based on the story of the same name by Earl Stanley Gardner.

In 1926, Cortes married silent film actress Alma Rubens, with whom he lived until her death from pneumonia in 1931.

In 1960, Cortez retired from the film business and returned to New York, where he became a broker at the investment bank Salomon Brothers on Wall Street.
