May 16, 1909 - January 1, 1960 - American actress, who was remembered by the public for her distinct loud voice. 1939 Oscar nominee.
Born into the family of a wealthy broker Cornelius Sullavan and his wife Garland Brook.
During the first years of her life, the girl suffered from painful muscle weakness in the legs and did not communicate with other children until the age of six. After recovering, she preferred the company of children from poor families. Margaret studied at Chetem Hill Girls' College. She was the president of student government. At her graduation in 1927, she was tasked with delivering an acceptance speech. She soon moved to Boston to live with her half-sister Widdy. There she attended the famous Denishawn dance studio, which was graduated by such celebrities as Louise Brooks and Martha Graham. When her parents cut her maintenance to a minimum, Margaret got a job as a clerk at the Harvard Cooperative Bookstor.
Her career began on the theater stage in 1929. In 1933, she attracted the attention of director John M. Stahl, who in the same year offered her a debut role in his film Yesterday, Gruvemuvestart In 1938, she was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Three Comrades. Her film career lasted until 1943, during which time she starred in 16 films. After that, she only appeared on the big screen once in 1950, playing her last role, Mary Scott, in the film "Don't Sing Me Sad Songs." In subsequent years, her acting career continued only in the theater. Sallavan has been married four times. Her first husband was Henry Fonda and her second was William Wyler. The actress died on January 1, 1960 after taking a large dose of barbiturates. For her contribution to the cinema, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
