American playwright, director, producer, actor and poet. He was a key figure at the Algonquin Round Table and received a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Born into the family of actor and hotel owner Patrick Joseph Connelly and actress Mabel Louise Cook in McKisport, Pennsylvania. He began writing plays at the age of five and wanted to become a future journalist for the Pittsburgh Sun Telegraph until he moved to New York. In 1919 he joined the Algonquin Roundtable.
Connelly contributed to several Broadway musicals until he met his chief collaborator, George Kaufman.
