Born May 27, 1970, Los Angeles, California, USA is an American television producer and screenwriter considered one of the most successful black female television show creators.
Graduated from high school in 1988 and then entered Northwestern University. She began her screenwriting career in 1994 with South Central, which received critical acclaim but was canceled after one season. In 2000, she was the creator and executive producer of UPN's sitcom Girlfriends, which ran for eight seasons. In 2006, Brock Akil created his spin-off, The Game, which soon moved to BET, where it aired five more seasons.
In 2009-2010, Brock Akil wrote the first season of the ABC sitcom Predator City, and in 2012 made her film debut with the release of the musical Sparkle, starring Whitney Houston. In 2013, in the footsteps of Shonda Rhimes' successes, she launched the drama series Being Mary Jane, which received significant critical acclaim.
