Born April 12, 1926 - American actress.
She began her career at the age of three with participation in radio shows. In the early 1930s, Withers moved with her mother to Hollywood, where she initially became a child model, and in 1934 she made her film debut in the comedy "Shining Eyes", which brought her first success. Over the next decade, she continued to appear extensively on the big screen, appearing in films such as Ginger (1935), The Farmer Marries (1935) and Shooting High (1940) .
In the 1940s, Withers became the heroine of two novels aimed at teenagers - Jane Withers and the Chamber of Secrets and Jane Withers and the Ghost of the Violin. In these novels, the main character has the same name and appearance as the actress, but the plot takes place in an alternate reality, where she is an ordinary teenager, not an actress. In 1958, after appearing in the drama "The Giant," starring James Dean, the actress almost stopped acting on the big screen, moving to television. Later she had roles in the television series The Hour of Alfred Hitchcock, Family of Monsters and Murder, She Wrote. Withers is also remembered for her role in the television commercial for the Comet detergent, in which her character was named Josephine the Plumber. The actress gave voice to Laverne in the animated films The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002) .
In 1947, Withers married a wealthy Texas oilman, William P. Moss, with whom she had three children. The marriage was not happy, and after six years the couple divorced. In 1955, the actress married Kenneth Herrera, one of the members of the musical group The Four Freshmen, who became the father of her two children. In 1968, Herrer was killed in a plane crash in California. In 1986, at the age of 34, her eldest son, Walter Randall Moss, died from his first marriage. According to the actress, only her strong faith helped her overcome all difficulties and personal losses. Her contributions to the US film industry are starred on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
