Caldwell began her career in 1978 as a member of the renowned theatrical group Negro Ensemble Company and made her Broadway debut two years later in the Tony Award-winning play Home. In 2004-2010, she played the role of Rose Nadler in the television series Lost .
In the early 1970s and early 1980s, Laverne was married to John Caldwell. The former spouses have a son - Ominara Caldwell. On her 54th birthday, April 17, 2004, Caldwell remarried artist, photographer and filmmaker Dazal Banks. Banks suffered from cancer and died in May 2005, 13 months after the wedding.
