Born in Detroit, Michigan on February 2, 1925, the son of George Joseph Stritch, an aviation corporation employee, and his wife Mildred. Her parents were Roman Catholics from Ireland and Wales. Cardinal Samuel Stritch, former Archbishop of Chicago, was one of her uncles. Elaine educated at the New School in New York, where she studied with Marlon Brando and Beatrice Arthur.
In 1946, she made her Broadway debut, marking the beginning of her long theatrical career. In the years that followed, she appeared in famous Broadway productions such as On the Wings of an Angel, Company, Call Me Madame, and Bus Stop. Simultaneously with the theater, Stritch began to appear on television screens, where in 1950-1970 she starred in several serials and television shows, including "Studio One", "Climax" and "On the Threshold of Night" .
Her film debut took place in 1956, but compared to her work in the theater and on television, the actress appeared on the big screen much less. The most famous films with her participation - "Providence" (1977), "Cocoon: Return" (1988), "On the High Seas" (1997), "Petty Fraudsters" (2000), "Autumn in New York" (2000) , "If the mother-in-law is a monster" (2005) and "Love and cigarettes" (2005) .
In 1973, Stritch married British actor John Bay and moved to London, where she continued to work in theater and television, and also became involved in a radio broadcast on the BBC. After the death of her husband from cancer in 1982, she returned to her homeland, where, after several years of lull, due to the struggle with alcoholism, she again began performing on Broadway. She has been nominated for the Tony Award four times during her theatrical career, and in 2001 she won it for her own Broadway show, Elaine Street Freedom .
In the 1990s, she had roles in the series Law & Order, The Third Planet from the Sun and Prison of Oz. Elaine Stritch is currently filming Studio 30, starring Colleen Donaghey. This role in 2007 earned her one of her three Emmy awards. She received previous ones for the television version of her show "Freedom Elaine Stritch" in 2004 and for her appearance on "Law & Order" in 1993.
Elaine Stritch died on July 17, 2014 at her home in Birmingham, Michigan at the age of 89.
