February 26, 1906 - October 2, 1987 - Anglo-American actress who was popular during the 1930s and 1940s. She was born in West Bromwich in the English county of Staffordshire. She received her education at the University of Birmingham.
She made her film debut in 1928 in one of the British films, and Madeline quickly gained recognition and success thanks to her image of an aristocratic blonde. In the early 1930s, she appeared in such popular films in her homeland as Atlantic, School of Scandal and I Was a Spy. In 1931, she unexpectedly left the cinema for a couple of years, after marrying Captain Phillip Astley. After the divorce in 1940, Carroll was married three more times, including the screenwriter Sterling Hayden, but all marriages ended in divorce. In 1935, the actress attracted the attention of Alfred Hitchcock and in the same year appeared in his film Thirty-Nine Steps. After the release of the film, Carroll received good reviews for her role, including the actress and critics from The New York Times. A year later, Hitchcock invited her to another of his films - Madeline played the role of Elsa Carrington in the film "Secret Agent" .
By that time Carroll had become quite popular and soon signed a contract with Paramount Pictures to shoot in Hollywood. There she appeared in such films as "Death of a General at Dawn" (1936), "Prisoner of Zenda" (1937), "Blockade" (1938), "Safari" (1940), "Northwest Mounted Police" (1940) , "My Favorite Blonde" (1942) and "Fan" (1949), where she performed her last film role. After that, Madeline played several more roles on television and in 1955 ended her acting career. Her film career slowed back in the early 1940s, after her sister was killed in a bombing [by German troops in England. Madeline immediately volunteered for the ranks of the Red Cross sisters and throughout World War II took an active part in many of the organization's programs. Carroll worked in hospitals in Italy and France, and for her special bravery and courage on the territory of the latter she was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor. In 1943, the actress became an American citizen. Madeline Carroll died of cancer on October 2, 1987 in the Spanish city of Marbella at the age of 81. Madeline Carroll received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to the film industry.
