Born July 17, 1935, she is an American actress and singer whose career spanned six decades. Carroll appeared in the early Hollywood films Carmen Jones (1954) and Porgy and Bess (1959) with black actors in the foreground, and in 1962 she made history as the first black woman to become a Tony Award winner. Carroll has since starred on the NBC sitcom Julia (1968-1971), which was the first television show to feature an African American woman in a non-stereotyped manner. From 1984 to 1987, she played Dominique Devereaux in ABC's prime-time soap Dynasty, thus becoming the first black actress to play a villainous character in a prime-time soap opera.
In 1975, Carroll received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her title role in the drama Claudine. In total, she has received five Emmy nominations during her career, three Golden Globes (winning 1969 for Julia), and in 1990 was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
