Born in the village of Lye, in Worcestershire, UK, the son of Dr. Edwin Hardwick. He attended grammar school in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, and then attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. He made his debut at the London Lyceum Tetra in 1912 in Frederick Melville's melodrama The Monk and the Woman, in which he played the role of Brother John. In the same year he worked as a stunt double at Her Majesty's Theater, and then at the Garrick Theater in plays by Charles Klein. In 1913 he joined Frank Benson's troupe and toured the provinces of England, South Africa and Rhodesia. In 1914 he played in Lawrence Irving's play The Unwritten Law, and then appeared at the Old Vic in 1914 as Malcolm in Shakespeare's Macbeth, the gravedigger in Hamlet and others. In 1914-1921, Hardwicke served in the ranks of the British army in France. In January 1922 he joined the Birmingham Theater Company. He has played many classic heroes in leading London theaters. He made a name for himself by playing in plays by Bernard Shaw, who considered Hardwick the fifth most talented actor, after the four Marx brothers. As one of the leading actors in Shaw's plays Caesar and Cleopatra, Pygmalion, The Apple Cart, Candida, Bitter But True, and Don Juan in Hell, Hardwicke was so soulful in the game, that at the age of 41 he became one of the youngest actors to be knighted. This event took place in 1934. From now on, the honorary knightly title "sir" has been added to Hardwicke's name .
Hardwick's debut in English cinematography took place in 1913. Among the first roles - the embodiment of such historical figures as Horatio Nelson and Alfred Dreyfus. In December 1935, he was elected Rede Lecturer of the University of Cambridge for 1936. In 1939, Hardwicke left for Hollywood to shoot, playing David Livingston in Stanley and Livingston, with Spencer Tracy as Henry Stanley. In the same year, another film was released with his participation: "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (Hadwick as Claude Frollo, Charles Logton as Quasimodo. After them the film "The Phantom of Frankenstein" (1942). Then Hardwicke continued his career already in New York.
In 1944 he returned to Great Britain, toured extensively, performed on stage, in particular at the Westminster Theater in March 1945. He returns to America at the end of 1945 and appears with Ethel Barrymore in The Shaw's play Pygmalion. In 1951-1952 he played on Broadway in the play Don Giovanni in Hell with Agnes Moorehead, Charles Boyer and Charles Lawton. Despite roles in films such as Les Miserables (1935), The Mines of King Solomon (1937), Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven (1944), Winsley Boy (1948) and Richard III by Laurence Olivier (1955) Hardwick is remembered today in his homeland mainly for the role of King Arthur in the musical comedy "Yankees at the Court of King Arthur" (1949), singing in a trio with Bing Crosby and William Bendix, and the role of Pharaoh Seti I in the film "Ten Commandments" (1956 ) Cecilia De Mille.
