Born April 9, 1977 - American musician, former vocalist of the group My Chemical Romance (2001-2013), and also a comic book writer. Has Italian roots on the mother's side and Scottish on the father's side. He first began singing in public in the fourth grade, playing the role of Peter Pan in a school play. His maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, taught Gerard how to sing, paint and perform from his earliest childhood. Gerard was very surprised to realize that he can really sing. Way later recalled, "She taught me everything I know." At school, Gerard was not popular, had a reputation as a "fat loser" and was a very amorous young man. However, one of the girls, who were once the object of his sighing, left for Greece, and the second even posed in frank poses for her boyfriend, which seriously upset Gerard, he “just swam in this pit of despair, jealousy and alcoholism” .
At the age of 15, according to Gerard in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, he was at gunpoint: "I was attacked with a 357 Magnum revolver, put a weapon to my forehead and forced me to kneel down and put my hands behind my head." After graduating from Belleville High School in 1995, Way decided to pursue a career in the comic book industry. Two comics have been released so far: The Umbrella Academy and The True Lives of Fabulous Killjoys .
He enrolled in the School of Visual Arts in New York, graduating in 1999 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. In the early 2000s, Way worked in New York. It so happened that he became an eyewitness to the events of September 11. This event prompted him to reconsider and radically change his life. He decided to associate her with music. Returning home, he formed a group with his school friend Matt Pelissier, later they were joined by another friend of theirs, Ray Thoreau. Mikey became interested in his older brother's new occupation, who, in order to play in Gerard's band, dropped out of college and learned to play the bass guitar in just six months. He also suggested the name of the group: it was borrowed from Irwin Welch, author of the book "Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance" (Ecstasy: three stories about love and chemistry), which Mikey saw at work. The group performed on the east coast and soon became quite popular in narrow circles. A little later, Frank Iero joined MCR as a rhythm guitarist, who saw them perform at one of the concerts and became interested in their peculiar style. A few months later, the band released their first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love (2002). For Way, music became an effective means of fighting eternal depression, alcoholism and drugs, which led to the writing of deeply personal songs such as "Demolition Lovers", dedicated to his (now ex) girlfriend, or "Helena", written after the death of his grandmother. who has always been very supportive of Gerard and the rest of the band.

Despite his success as a musician, Way did not give up painting - he painted for his and other similar groups. For example, the album covers of My Chemical Romance Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004) and The Black Parade (2006) were painted by Gerard. Through his work, he also raised money for various charitable causes, in particular for the fight against breast cancer. He also recorded a cover version of the song "Under Pressure" with the group The Used to help the victims of the tsunami (to which all the money from the sale of this single was directed) .
Way has struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for many years and has remained sober since August 2004. On September 3, 2007, after a gig in Colorado, Way married Mindless Self Indulgence bassist Lindsay Ballato. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California. On May 27, 2009, the couple had a daughter, Bandit Lee.
