Irwin's parents narrowly escaped the Holocaust and lived in Hungary until 1956. They flew to the United States shortly before the Soviet invasion in order to suppress the Hungarian Revolution. Irwin grew up in Queens and became a dentist; Susan Schlussel Brown worked as an orthodontist. After the wedding, the couple settled in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The Brown family besides Samuel had four other children: Lisa, Cornelio, Sam and Adam. Adam Brown is the founder of Pencils of Promise, a charity that builds schools in developing countries.

Brown grew up in Kos Cob, Connecticut and attended Greenwich High School where he was the class leader. From the ages of 13 to 18, he played basketball, and his Connecticut Flame team was part of the Amateur Athletic Union. When Brown was 17, his parents adopted Sam Mahanga and Cornelio Jubunda, former Mozambique junior players. Since at that time the existing basketball sports program was almost completely curtailed, Irwin Brown attracted his sons to participate in the selection for the All-Star Game. Mahanga and Jubunda became the favorites of the Greenwich High School basketball team, despite the hacking from fans - an experience that was not easy for the Brown family. While attending Greenwich High School, Brown submitted his entry to the National History Day Documentary Video Competition. His 10-minute video, entitled "The Hungarian Conflict," focused on the life of Hungarian Jews before, during and after the Holocaust. The film won the regional stage, state competition, and ultimately finished third. A member of the Brown family sent him to Steven Spielberg's office, who in turn sent the Browns video to the Holocaust Memorial Museum (USA). Brown called Spielberg's endorsement one of the most inspiring moments of his life.
