Wright is the author of six books, but the most famous of them is the 2006 edition, The Tower of Troubles: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11. Quickly becoming a bestseller in 2007, she received several awards - the Jay Anthony Lucas Prize and the Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction. The book was featured in The New York Times and The Washington Post's Top 10 Books of 2007, and was highly regarded by commentators as an excellent source on the history of Al Qaeda and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The title of the book is a reference to Osama bin Laden's three quotes of the ayah from the Koran.

Wright wrote for The New Yorker about acclaimed screenwriter, producer, filmmaker, and former Scientologist Paul Haggis. In 2013, Wright's book, The Path to Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Dungeon of Faith, was published, where he summarized his interviews with more than two hundred former Scientologists, and reviewed the history of the Church of Scientology and its leadership. In an interview with The New York Times, Wright said that he had received "innumerable" letters threatening lawsuits from lawyers representing the Church of Scientology and celebrities who are active members. Official statements from the Church of Scientology also followed, refuting the information contained in the book.

In 1994, Wright published the book Remembering Satan: The Tragic Cause of Recovered Memory, about Paul Ingram's False Memory Trial.

Wright co-wrote Siege (1998), which follows a terrorist attack in New York that narrows civil liberties and discriminates against Arab Americans.

Wright co-wrote Oliver Stone's film Noriega, God's Favorite (2000).

In 2010, Wright's documentary, My Journey to Al Qaeda, was released on HBO. It was based on the material Wright collected during his travels in the Middle East to write The Tower of Troubles. The film focuses on Al-Qaeda, Islamic radicalism, hostility to the US and US presence in Iraq and Afghanistan, combined with Wright's first-person narrative, documentary footage and photographs.
