Jeffrey Wright was born on December 7, 1965 in Washington DC. His mother worked as a lawyer, and his father died when Jeffrey was only one year old. The mother raised her son with the help of her sister. He received his secondary education at St. Albans, then attended Amherst College, where he earned a BA in Political Science in 1987. Then Jeffrey planned to continue his studies at the New York University School of Law, but got carried away with acting and dropped out of the university two months later.
Wright's first appearances took place at Off-Broadway theaters in New York and Washington, and since 1990 he began to appear in supporting roles in films. In 1991 he joined the theater company The Acting Company.
In August 2000, he married actress Carmen Ejogo, they had a son, Elijah.
May 23, 2004 received an honorary degree from his alma mater - Amherst College.
On July 12, 2008, Wright and six other Bush Jr. cast and crew members were detained at the Stray Cat Bar in Shreveport, Louisiana for altercation with police. Soon, all seven were released without charge.
In 2007 and 2009, he twice produced the films Blackout and One Blood.
