Born February 15, 1954, Portland, Oregon, USA, full name: Matthew Abram Groening is an American animator, creator, creative consultant and executive producer of the animated series The Simpsons and Futurama.

The pronunciation of his surname has been debated on several occasions both in the US and in other countries.

Groening attended Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington; in his own words, this educational institution had rather free morals. He was the editor-in-chief of the university newspaper, The Cooper Point Journal. In her weekly issues, he showed talent as a journalist and later an illustrator, starting to publish mini-comics. There, he befriended Linda Barry, who later became an illustrator, when he learned that she had sent a letter to writer Joseph Heller, one of Graining's favorite authors, and received a response from him.

After graduating from college, he moved to Los Angeles in 1977 at the age of 23 to pursue literary work. Until 1980, at various times he worked as a director's chauffeur, record seller, courier, journalist and in his spare time he drew comics. In comics, he described his life in Los Angeles to his friends, calling them "Life in Hell". This title was suggested to him by the chapter "How to Get to Hell" from the book of the German philosopher Walter Kaufmann "Critique of Religion and Philosophy". The characters in the comic were the rabbits Binky and Sheba, and the strange, identical men, Akbar and Jeff. Groening began making photocopies of these comics and distributing them at the record store where he then worked. In 1978, one of his mini-comics was printed in the avant-garde Wet magazine. In 1980, the comic was published by the Los Angeles Reader. In 1982, Matt was entrusted with leading a column on rock and roll in this newspaper, but much more often he wrote in it about his childhood, about life, about what he hates, and even about those things that he saw on street. In the end, he was removed from the "music" column.

In the late 1980s, Groening drew a number of posters and illustrated advertising brochures for Apple with the Life in Hell characters.

In 1985, producer James Brooks took an interest in Groening and invited him to do animation. These were supposed to be small animated sketches for the Tracy Ullman Show entertainment program. It was assumed that for this purpose will be used characters from the comic "Life in Hell", but fearing loss of copyright, Groening decided to come up with something new: the Simpsons family.

On April 19, 1987, The Simpsons first appeared on screen and became incredibly popular, leading to the creation of a half-hour episode starting December 17, 1989. And in the summer of 2007, a full-length cartoon about the adventures of the Simpsons family was released.
