In 2011 he directed the film "Chronicle". The film was released by Fox on February 3, 2012 and earned $ 125 million worldwide.

After the release of the debut film, Sony studio offered Trunk to make a solo film about Venom, based on the Marvel comics. Also, Warner Bros. they also offered him to direct the graphic novel "Red Star", but he chose to direct the upcoming science fiction thriller "Fantastic Four".

In July 2012, it became known that Fox had approved Trunk as director of Fantastic Four. The production of the film was overshadowed by scandals, according to press reports on the set of Fantastic Four, Trunk was in conflict with the actors (he almost got into a fight with the leading actor Miles Teller) and with the producers who made changes to the picture. The film was released in 2015, flopped at the box office and was trashed by critics. On Twitter, Josh Trank blamed Fox for this.

Prior to the release of Fantastic Four, Lucasfilm offered Trunk to direct one of the Star Wars films, but after the failure of Fantastic Four, the deal was canceled. Trunk himself stated that he did not want to shoot a second blockbuster in a row, as the work on "Fantastic Four" was very difficult for him.
