July 21, 1924 - February 24, 2006 - American comedian film and television. Winner of an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series five times.
He grew up during the Great Depression. Knotts had two brothers, one of whom died of asthma when Knotts was still a teenager. He graduated from Morgantown High School and was educated at West Virginia University. He began performing as a ventriloquist and magician even before leaving school. While serving in the army during the war, Knotts worked on entertainment shows for soldiers. Knotts married in 1948 and the couple had two children. He divorced in 1969. After several roles on Broadway and a role in Hard to Be a Sergeantruen, he became a regular guest star on The Steve Allen Show. Knotts received 5 Emmy awards for his work on The Andy Griffith Show, ruen in 1960-1965. After leaving the show, he starred in many films. Over the course of his half-century career, Knotts has appeared in more than 25 films and 7 television series. In the movie This crazy, crazy, crazy, Mad World he played alongside such comedians as Buster Keaton and Jonathan Winters. Don Knotts died in Los Angeles in 2006.
In 1998, Knott's hometown was named after him.
