Born September 19, 1928 - American film actor.
Adam West's real name is William West Anderson. He was born in Walla Walla, Washington state to Otto West Anderson and Audrey Steer. From childhood, West was a fan of comics, and Batman was one of his favorite characters. As a teenager, Adam moved with his brother John and his remarried mother to Seattle, where he attended Lakeside Private School. After graduation, he studied literature and psychology at Whitman College in Walla Walla, and later continued his studies at Stanford University's master's degree. Possessing an imposing voice, West began working as a radio DJ while still in college. In the early 1950s, he enlisted in the army and served for two years. After being retired, West began to try himself in the acting profession. His first role was as a minor character on the children's television program The Kini Popo Show, which was filmed in Hawaii. Over time, West became the protagonist of this TV show. In 1959, after a series of small roles in passing films, West and his family moved to Hollywood, where he hoped to make a successful acting career. Instead of his real name, he began to use the stage name Adam West. He soon signed to Warner Bros. West's first role in a major film was Young Philadelphians, starring Paul Newman and Barbara Rush. In the early 1960s, Adam made cameo appearances in a large number of television series, often in the western genre. So he played Doc Holliday in three westerns of the ABC channel at once. West also starred in thirty episodes of the police drama Detectives, starring Robert Taylor. Further in his career followed a series of leading roles in films of category B, such as "Tammy and the Doctor" (1963), "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" (1964), West got into the new ABC series "Batman" thanks to his participation in an advertisement for the drink Nesquik. In the commercial, he appeared in the guise of a spy in the manner of James Bond. In this role, West saw the producer of the future show William Dozier and offered him the main role - the crime fighter Batman. Immediately after its release in 1966, the series became popular with both children and adults, became an important part of American pop culture of the 1960s, even Hollywood actors did not hesitate to appear in it in episodic roles. West himself quickly rose to the status of a TV star. However, by the third season, which began in 1968, the ratings were falling rapidly, the plots became monotonous, and the audience became boring with the original style of "Batman". The producers tried to make changes to correct the situation, in particular, they gave Batman an assistant in the person of Batgirl, Following the closure of Batman, West's career went downhill, as did the rest of the show's leading actors. He shuttled from one second-rate television series to another, starred in walk-through films and could not find a single worthwhile role, since, according to the producers, the audience was too strongly associated with the image of Batman. Although in 1970 West was seriously considered as one of the candidates for the role of James Bond in the movie "Diamonds Are Forever," he himself refused to participate, because he believed that the famous British super spy should not be played by an American. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, West worked extensively on the voiceover of superhero cartoons. He even returned to his most famous role in the 1977 animated series The New Adventures of Batman, where he reunited with Burt Ward, who played Robin in the original series. In 1989, a new surge of interest in Batman, provoked by Tim Burton's film about the adventures of a hero in a bat costume, had a positive effect on West. Although the actor himself was upset that Burton did not invite him to the main role. The comedy series Lookwell was scheduled for 1991 on NBC, in which West was to play the self-deprecating role of a former television detective who decides to investigate crimes himself. After the pilot episode was filmed, the channel's leaders did not give the series a green light .
Seth MacFarlane, creator of the Family Guy animated series, used West's character in his show, transforming him from an actor to the eccentric mayor of the fictional town of Quahog. Adam West himself has been voicing this character since 2000. West also worked as a voice actor on the animated series The Simpsons, The Fairly OddParents, Kim Five-with-Plus, Batman and a number of others.
