After his parents divorced, his mother changed his surname to "Graham", after author Kenneth Graham, and later added the surname "Smith" from her remarriage. He earned a degree in filmography from Emerson College.
Graham-Smith's first widely published book was The Big Book of Porn: An Insight into the Dirty Film World.
