At first, the Jan family settled in the Canadian city of Regina, but soon moved to the United States and settled in the Detroit suburb of Troy. In Detroit, the Janov family founded a network of beauty salons. Steven Yang graduated from Kalamazoo College in 2005, where he studied psychology. Even in his first year, he, having become acquainted with the work of a student improvisation group, became interested in the acting profession. After studying for a year in a student drama club, he became a member of the Monkapult troupe in his second year, and played in the theater at the same time. When Stephen told his parents after graduating from college that he did not plan to become a doctor or lawyer, but wanted to try himself in the genre of improvisational comedy, they supported their son and gave him two years to finally decide on his future.
In 2005, shortly after graduating from college, Ian moved to Chicago, following college friend Jordan Klepper, who arranged for him to tour with the famous Chicago improvisation group The Second City. Yang studied improvisation in a group, and since 2007 he began teaching himself. At the same time, he appeared in the Asian American comedy group Stir Friday Night. After working for four years at The Second City, Ian decided he wanted to pursue an acting career. In October 2009 he moved to Los Angeles.
After moving to Los Angeles, Ian auditioned for a role in the pilot for ABC's new comedy series Awkward Situations for Men, but did not get it. Instead, he was offered a cameo role in one of the episodes of The Big Bang Theory. The second tests for Jan were successful. He landed the role of Glenn, a pizza delivery man who was caught up in a group of survivors of the zombie apocalypse in the AMC drama series The Walking Dead. Yang's character remains one of the main characters throughout all six seasons of the series, the actor himself in 2011 was nominated for this role for the Saturn Award as Best Supporting Actor on TV.
In addition to filming films and television series, Yang is involved in dubbing characters for computer games and cartoons. Before moving to Los Angeles, he voiced Korean soldiers in the games Crysis and Crysis Warhead. In 2013, Yang voiced the character Wang in Avatar: The Legend of Korra. He also voiced the main character in the animated film Chew, based on the comic book of the same name, and the character Keith in the animated series Voltron: The Legendary Defender.
