In 1959 he graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles, also studied at the University of Hawaii.
In 1980 he played the role of businessman Ray Hanley in the Oscar-winning film "Ordinary People" .
From 1981 to 1987 he played the tough and brutal SWAT officer Howard Hunter in the police television series Hill Street Blues. For this role, he was nominated for an Emmy Award.
