Born January 2, 1961, Los Angeles is an American film director and screenwriter.

He makes his first amateur films while still in school. In 1985, Haynes received a bachelor's degree in art and semiotics from the prestigious Brown University, by which time he already had several short films, including the picture "Assassins" (1985) about the relationship between Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine.

After graduation, Haynes travels to New York, where he is filming the 43-minute film Superstar. The life story of famous 70s pop singer Karen Carpenter, who died of anorexia, is played out using Barbie and Ken dolls. After several festival screenings, an injunction is imposed on the demonstration and distribution of the tape due to copyright infringement of the music of The Carpenters. However, Haynes is noticed, and Superstar soon becomes an underground classic.

Haynes's full-length feature debut, Venom (1991), is a mix of three stories of different genres: a mock-documentary investigation into a seven-year-old flying boy who killed his father; parodies of a low-budget movie of the 50s - a black-and-white fantasy horror about a leper scientist; homoerotic prison drama based on the "Diary of a Thief" by Jean Genet. The reaction to the film is contradictory: on the one hand, the picture is strongly condemned by representatives of the right-wing radical public, on the other hand, it receives several important awards (including the Sundance Film Festival Grand Prix and the Teddy Prize of the Berlin Film Festival). The critic enlists the director as a representative of New Queer Cinema.

But in his second full-length film Safety (1995) Haynes goes beyond the narrow confines of gay cinema. The film takes place in California in the late 80s. The main character, an exemplary housewife played by Julianne Moore, suddenly begins to feel allergic to literally all the achievements of the 20th century, from fuel additives to condoms. The picture, the first scenes of which were filmed in a traditional realistic manner, towards the end acquires more and more caricature forms and demonstrates the alienation of modern man from his environment. Many critics cite Haynes's film Safety as one of the achievements of independent cinema in the 90s and see it as a kind of condemnation to the era of Ronald Reagan. This film also launched the brilliant film career of actress Julianne Moore.

At the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, Haynes presents his investigative film, Velvet Goldmine, about the 70s glam rock era. Despite the fact that the story told in the film is completely fictional, Iggy Pop and David Bowie are easily guessed in the heroes of The Velvet Goldmine. The film features compositions of many famous musicians of that time, some of the songs are specially re-recorded with the vocals of the main characters Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys-Myers. In addition to music, in order to more accurately convey the atmosphere of the 70s, Haynes uses a rich psychedelic visual series, fills the tape with all kinds of cultural reminiscences. The filmmaker's prowess is highly acclaimed by film professionals, with Haynes receiving the Artistic Contribution Award in Cannes.

Haynes once again demonstrates his stylizing abilities in the film "Far from Paradise" (2002). In this film, again playing a housewife, Julianne Moore starts a close relationship with her black gardener, which, given the time of action - the 50s, inevitably leads to a scandal. The picture makes a strange impression: almost literal adherence to the visual style of Hollywood cinema of the 50s is combined with touching upon topics that were taboo in those years - interracial relations, homosexuality, etc. The film "Far from Paradise" won about 70 film awards and received four Oscar nominations ...

September 2007 saw the premiere of the film I'm Not There, starring Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett. The film participated in the main competition of the Venice Film Festival, as a result of which it won two awards at once: Haynes received a special jury prize, and Blanchett was named the best actress of the show. In the center of the plot of the film is the biography of Bob Dylan - six different actors demonstrate different aspects of the life and work of the famous musician.

Haynes's next full-length footage was released only in 2015. The painting "Carol" was presented in the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival. It is based on an early novel by Patricia Highsmith. The tape told about the love of two women in New York in the middle of the last century (their roles were played by Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara). Carol allowed Haynes to revisit his beloved 1950s aesthetic. The film confirmed the director's reputation as the best stylist in modern cinema and was enthusiastically received by the festival press.
