In 1948 he graduated from St. Patrick's School in Maynooth with a Bachelor of Arts. Then he studied at the Pedagogical College of St. Joseph in Belfast. He worked as a teacher in schools in Londonderry County (1950-1960).
Started writing radio plays and short stories for The New Yorker in the 1950s. Written in 1963, the play Philadelphia, I'm Coming To You! Was first performed at the Dublin Theater Festival in 1964, then in 1966 in New York and the following year in London, received audiences.
Later he wrote melodramatic plays. The first political play, Citizens of Honor (1973), about Bloody Sunday, 1972, was staged simultaneously at the Royal Court Theater in London and at the Abbey Theater in Dublin. For his play "Dancing at the Meadows," Friel received the Laurence Olivier Prize in 1991, and the New York Tony Prize a year later. This play, based on autobiographical material, was filmed in 1999.
