May 18, 1917, Aberdeen, Scotland, UK; died 3 August 1993, West Tyterley, Wiltshire, England, UK - Scottish actor.
He made his stage debut around the end of the 30s, while still a student at Rossall. During World War II, he played supporting roles in classic propaganda films such as Where We Serve, Went the Day Well ?, The Way Forward, and also played Mr. Winkle in the 1952 film The Pickwick Papers. ... However, he received his first leading role only in 1958, when he played Theo van Gogh in the film "Lust for Life" .
Among his works in theater are such plays as Present Laughter (1943) by Noel Coward, where Coward played himself, The Eagle with Two Heads (1947), You Never Can Tell (1948) and The Heiress ( 1949) with Ralph Richardson, Peggy Ashcroft, and Donald Sinden. He unforgettably portrayed Major of the Medical Service, Clipton, who expressed grave doubts about the wisdom of Colonel Nicholson's (Alec Guinness) attempts to build a bridge to surpass the Japanese in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), where his closing words: “Madness. Donald starred in the 1960 television adaptation of Archibald Cronin's book The Citadel and has appeared regularly in many other television dramas in the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as in theater. In 1961 he played Prince Albert in the Hallmark Hall of Fame production, based on Lawrence Houseman's Victoria Regina.
