Butterfield began his acting career at the age of seven, on the stage of the school theater. In 2006, Aisa made her film debut; the boy played the role of Andrew in Simon Shore's television drama After Thomas.

Two years later, Butterfield played the German boy Bruno in Mark Herman's drama Boy in the Striped Pajamas, for whose role he was nominated for the British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer, but lost to Dev Patel.

In 2011, Asa Butterfield played the role of Hugo Cabre in Martin Scorsese's adventure film "Keeper of Time", where he co-stars were Ben Kingsley and Chloe Moretz. The picture was favorably received by film critics and successfully proved itself in the world box office.

In 2013, Butterfield starred in Gavin Hood's science fiction film Ender's Game, in which he played the lead role of the gifted boy Ender Wiggin.

In 2015, he starred in the film White Circus by Macek Scherbowski and Chris Lavis, and in 2016 he played one of the main roles in Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, based on the novel of the same name by Ransom Riggs.

In 2017, the film Space Between Us was released, in which he played the main role.
