August 30, 1797, London, England, UK - February 1, 1851, London, England, UK - English writer.

Her mother died shortly after giving birth, and her father, forced to take care of Mary and her half-sister Fannie Imlay, soon married again. Under his leadership, Mary received an excellent education, which was a rarity for girls of that time.

She met Percy Shelley, a freethinker and radical like her father, when Percy and his first wife Harriet visited the Godwin home in London. In the summer of 1814, he and Mary, then only 16, fell in love. They fled to France with Mary's half-sister, Claire Clairmont. This was the poet's second escape, as he had escaped with Harriet three years earlier. Returning a few weeks later, the young couple were amazed that Godwin did not want to see them.

Mary was comforted by her work and Percy, who became, despite disappointment and tragedy, the love of her life. Percy was also more than satisfied with his companion in the early years. He was glad that Mary could "feel poetry and understand philosophy" - although she, like Harriet before her, refused his offer to share her with his friend Thomas Hogg. Thus, Mary realized that Percy's loyalty to the ideals of free love would always conflict with his inner desire for "true love", which he wrote about in many of his poems.

In 1816, the couple spent the summer with Lord Byron, John William Polidori and Claire Clairmont at Byron's Villa near Geneva, Switzerland, where Mary had the idea for Frankenstein. After that, Mary began work on a work that was originally supposed to be in the genre of a novel. Influenced by the enthusiasm of Percy Shelley, the novel grew to the size of the novel, which became for her first and was called "Frankenstein, or Modern Prometheus." This novel was published in 1818, the first edition was anonymous.

In January 1816, their son William was born; it was named after Mary's father. On December 30, 1816, shortly after Percy's wife committed suicide, he and Mary were married. In September 1817, daughter Clara was born, who died a year later. In June of the following year, William died, and on November 12, his son Florence was born. Percy drowned in July 1822 while returning home from Livorno on the schooner Ariel.

A year later, Mary returned to England and has since dedicated herself to raising her son and a career as a professional writer.

The last decade of her life was marred by a serious illness.
