Born October 7, 1931, Klerksdorp, Transvaal Province - South African actor.
At the age of 12, his family moved to Johannesburg. His father worked as a teacher, and his mother worked as a cook and cleaner at a school for the blind. Although he dreamed of becoming a doctor, the family could not afford the expensive training. Following his father, he became a teacher, taught in college and school. However, due to the strengthening of the policy of apartheid and the legislative consolidation of inequality in the rights to education of the white and black population of South Africa, he resigned. Desmond Tutu took up theology studies and became an Anglican priest in 1960. One of the first in this capacity was the position of Fort Hare University - at that time the only university for blacks in South Africa. Subsequently, he continued his studies, lived for some time in Great Britain, where he was a parish priest. In 1975 Desmond Tutu became the first black dean of the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary in Johannesburg. Desmond Tutu rose to fame for his fight against the apartheid regime in the 1970s. He became the first black bishop in South Africa in 1984, and has also chaired the South African Council of Churches and the Pan-African Conference of Churches. After the end of the apartheid regime, he headed a commission of inquiry to investigate crimes committed in South Africa in the 1970s and 1980s. The Nobel Prize was awarded to Tutu in 1984 for her leadership in the campaign against apartheid. In 2010, Desmond Tutu completed community activities on his 79th birthday. He was a close friend of Nelson Mandela, and together with his wife took part in the farewell ceremony for Mandela in 2013. The ceremony was overshadowed by unpleasant news - unknown persons robbed Tutu's house when he was giving a speech. Thieves have entered Tutu's house for the second time this year. In August, malefactors broke into the premises at night and, while the archbishop slept, stole several household items.
