Born October 8, 1944 in Harris, Texas, USA - American screenwriter and producer.

grew up in Baytown, Texas and attended Rice University, earning a bachelor's degree in history in 1966. While studying at Rice, Broyles was an active member and contributing editor of the student newspaper the Rice Thresher. Back in 1966, Broyles also contributed articles to the Houston Post. Broyles served as student union president at Rice during the 1965-1966 undergraduate year, and was awarded the Hugh Scott Cameron Award for Outstanding Community Service. He remained a staunch supporter of the university throughout his career, securing a speech in 1983 and receiving the Outstanding Alumni Award in 1993.

After graduating from Rice, Broyles studied as a Marshall Fellow at Oxford University, where he received his master's degrees in politics, philosophy and economics in 1968. While at Oxford, he pursued his interests in journalism and government. He has written political columns for Oxford University Journal and contributed articles to The Economist in London. He also spoke about all of England for the US Information Service. He later worked for a while for Leo Kramer, Inc. in Washington, DC, at a social science consultancy firm as a consultant on city models, workforce, and VISTA curriculum.

In 1988, Broyles found critical success with the television series China Beach. In addition to creating the show with John Sacret Young, Broyles also wrote or co-wrote early episodes, and remained a producer and creative consultant throughout the show. In 1991, the Golden Globe-winning China Beach left the screen, but Broyles was successful in his second project, Undercover.

Also in 1993, Broyles turned his attention from television projects to feature film writing. He shared a screenwriting job with former Texas Monthly writer Al Reinert for the film Apollo 13. The film, loosely based on The Lost Moon, co-written with astronaut Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger, was directed by Ron Howard. The film was met with critical and box office success, and Broyles and Reinhart were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
