April 21, 1915 - June 3, 2001 - American actor, writer and artist of Mexican descent. He was twice awarded an Oscar for supporting roles (1952 - "Viva Zapata!"; 1956 - Gauguin in the film by Vincent Minnelli "Lust for Life"). Other major films include the Bedouin leader in David Lean's Oscar-winning film Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and the Greek Zorba in the 1964 film of the same name by Michalis Kakoyannis. He also starred in two famous films by Mustafa Akkad "Muhammad - Messenger of God" (as Hamza, the uncle of the Prophet Muhammad) and "Lion of the Desert" (as Omar al-Mukhtar).
