Stephen Gately is an Irish actor, children's writer and dancer, vocalist of the Boyzone band.

Stephen Patrick David Gately was born on March 17, 1976 in a working class district of Dublin, the son of a cleaning lady, Margaret, and former decorator Martin Gately. Stephen also has three brothers and a sister. As a teenager, Gately appeared frequently in various musicals and theatrical productions at school.

Gaitley joined Boyzone in 1993 and soon became very famous in Ireland. They were considered one of the main pop groups of the nineties and rivaled in popularity with the British Take That. After a decade, the band members decided to start solo projects. Stephen was the first to bring this idea to life. His debut album New Beginning, which was released in 2000, peaked at number three in the UK charts, and Gately has four solo records.

During the last years of his life, Stephen wrote a children's science fiction novel called The Tree of Seasons, but he never finished it. His work was continued by Jules Williams and June Considine, on the fundamentals of Gaitley's handwritten materials. The book was released in the UK and Ireland in 2010 with a foreword by Elton John and David Furnish.

Stephen announced his sexual orientation in 1999. Gately began dating businessman Andrew Coles, and in 2006, London hosted their civil partnership ceremony.

Stephen Gaitley died at his home in Mallorca on October 10, 2009 as a result of cardiac arrest, the singer had a congenital defect, which was aggravated by his addiction to drugs.
