Not always getting into the main team of the first team, in 1998 he signed a contract with Moscow "Torpedo", with which he won bronze medals in the Russian championship in 2000. For 8 years of playing for Torpedo, he became the team captain and a legend in the eyes of the fans, earning the right to play for the national team, took part in the 2002 World Cup and the 2004 European Championship. Five times he was among the 33 best football players in Russia, 4 times was recognized as the best player of Torpedo at the end of the season, became the owner of the Honest Play prize .

In 2005, Yuri Semin invited Semshov to Dynamo Moscow. However, the first season was crumpled. In 2007, the Dynamo management invited a new coach to the team - Andrey Kobelev managed to make a combat-ready team out of experienced football players, which finished in sixth place, and Semshov was recognized by the fans as the best player in the team. He was again invited to the national team - in particular at the 2008 European Championship, where, together with the team, he won bronze medals.

Having spent 96 meetings for the "blue-white" at that time, in which he scored 17 goals, Semshov agreed to move to St. Petersburg "Zenith". Thus, the team brought together the striking three of the national team's midfielders - Semshov, Denisov and Zyryanov. However, he played only one season for the team (2009 - 26 games, 6 goals), after which he returned to the Dynamo team. Having played at the base of the Moscow team for two seasons (in the 2010 season - 29 games, 5 goals, in the 2011/12 season - 37 games and 12 goals), after the arrival of the new coach - Romanian Dan Petrescu - he lost his place in the main squad. As a result, in the summer of 2013, Dynamo terminated the contract with the player. On July 31, 2013, he signed a one-year contract with Wings of the Soviets, while scoring the first goal in the Samara squad against his former team.

February 14, 2015 Semshov announced his retirement.
