Channing Tatum was born in Callman, Alabama. When he was 6 years old, his family moved to Mississippi. In childhood, he was fond of baseball and football, and in the ninth grade he was sent to military school. Relying on his athletic ability, he entered West Virginia College but did not graduate. He tried several professions, worked as a construction worker, salesman and broker before moving into the modeling business. He enjoyed working in front of the camera on the set of commercials and decided to take acting lessons.
His debut was a cameo in the series Miami Crime Scene Investigation. He first appeared on the big screen in the sports drama Coach Carter, starring Samuel Jackson. Despite his athletic build, Tatum had no experience in basketball, so in preparation for filming in this film, he trained hard along with everyone. He then starred in the films Crazy and Supercross. Channing's role in The War of the Worlds was so tiny that his name didn't even make it into the credits. But the role of Duke, the footballer that Amanda Bynes' character falls in love with in She's the Boy, made him famous. Tatum received critical acclaim for his role in the independent film "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints" which at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival won the Special Jury Prize for Best Acting Duo and the Best Drama Director. In this film, Channing worked with such famous actors as Robert Downey Jr., Chazz Palminteri, Diane Wist and Eric Roberts, and notable actors of his generation - Rosario Dawson and Shea LaBeouf.
In the same year, Tatum starred in the film Step Forward, playing the role of a street dancer whose lifestyle often goes against the rules of society. Rising star Jenna Dewan became Channing's partner in this film.
