Joseph Kheifits - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips.
December 17, 1905, Minsk - April 24, 1995, St. Petersburg.
People's Artist of the USSR (1964), Hero of Socialist Labor (1975) .
Studied at the Leningrad College of Screen Arts, at the Film Department of the Institute of Art History. From 1928 to 1950 he directed all his films together with A.G. Zarchs. In the center of the main film plot, the term I.E. Kheifitz, even when he is saturated with obvious public importance ("Deputy of the Baltic" or "Member of the government"), is the private life of a person. In the 1930s, this circumstance caused critical attacks. Professor Polezhaev was called "a schoolboy covered with cotton wool", "Christmas Santa Claus." The leading collective farmer, Alexandra Sokolova, was accused of "tearfulness", of being too "woman". In the 1950s, such a hero turned out to be more intelligible and at the same time loved by the audience. In the films The Big Family and The Rumyantsev Case, for all their saturation with Soviet mythologemes, the plot is based on the conflict “individual - collective”. In the 1960s-1980s, Kheifitz's concept of a film hero became noticeably more complicated, perhaps that is why he was attracted by Chekhov's and Turgenev's prose, the works of his contemporaries Pavel Nilin and Boris Vasiliev. The spontaneous intentionality of the flow of life, the unpredictability of the human individuality itself, and as a result, the inconsistency of its life position, the discrepancy with the established ideas about the norms of behavior - this is what becomes the main subject of artistic interest. In this sense, the name of the film adaptation of Chekhov's "Duel" proposed by the director is symptomatic - "A Bad Good Man". Indeed, what is Laevsky performed by O.I. Dahl or von Koren V.S. Vysotsky? And Tanya Fesheva from "The Only One" based on Nilin's story "Fool", played by Elena Proklova, or her young husband Kolya (Valery Zolotukhin)? “Simplified measurements, with whom we sometimes try to approach the human soul, so often turn out to be worthless ... "- what Heifitz said about" The One "is related to all of his paintings of the last decades.
This concept of a person on the screen makes Kheifitz an essentially acting director. Setting on the actor determines the system of expressive means: close-up of a human face; medium, where the hero mates with the environment; psychological detail in the acting; free intra-frame editing, which allowed the actor to express himself. The last film of the master is "The Wandering Bus". And here the director, already at a rather respectable age, found a new creative turn, but relying on the usual attention to a person and his environment. There seems to be no acute crisis situations, as was the case in the stories of past years. A wrecked bus with tired actors performing in half-empty cold clubs drives around the province, and life springs up around it, terribly far, it seems, from everything that has to do with art. He was buried at the Memorial Cemetery in the village of Komarovo near St. Petersburg.
