Born on October 27, 1899. Having completed his directorial practice under the direction of Eisenstein, he managed to shoot several films at the Moscow studios even before joining "Armenfilm". His first film in Armenia - "Karo" (1937) - immediately gained popularity, and Ai-Artyan started shooting his second film, the comedy "People of Our Collective Farm" (1939) with great enthusiasm. It seemed to him that this tape was expected to be even more successful than "Karo". But contrary to his expectations, the senior cinematographic authorities sharply criticized the picture. Out of frustration, the director got drunk and ... sent a telegram to Stalin that, they say, in protest against undeserved criticism, he decided to commit suicide. Having sober up, he seemed to have forgotten about her and calmly went about his daily work. Stalin's reaction was instant: he ordered Poskrebyshev to investigate the telegram and warn the People's Commissar of Cinematography Ivan Bolshakov for the incontinence shown by the filmmakers. When it became clear that the "offended" is alive and well, the People's Commissar immediately gave the command to prepare an order for the "expulsion of Ai-Artyan from the cinema".
