He taught at VGIK.
An actor known for the roles of ordinary hardworking men. One of the notable roles is Uncle Kondrat in the film "Such a Guy Lives" (his student Lydia Chashchina suggested to Shukshin to invite Boris Ivanovich to the shooting of this film).
In 1964, the film director Semyon Tumanov invited him to play the role of a policeman in the film "To Me, Mukhtar!", But Boris Balakin did not live to see filming.
