Neil Marshall was born in Newcastle, UK. He decided to become a filmmaker at the age of 11 after watching Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Later he shot and edited home films using the Super 8 mm camera. In 1989 he entered Northumbria Polytechnic College (now Northumbria University); in subsequent years he worked as a freelance editor at various studios. In 1995, Marshall was hired as a screenwriter for Bharat Nalluri's Kill Time to Kill (1998) .
Marshall's first independent project, the low-budget horror film Dogs Warriors (2002) gained cult status in the UK and the US and won the Golden Crow and Pegasus awards at the 2002 Brussels Film Festival, as well as the Saturn Award for Best DVD of the same year.
Neil Marshall's second film, Descent (2005), has also won a number of prestigious awards, including the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film. After its release, Neil Marshall was attributed by film critics to the Splat pack filmmakers group, who revived the horror genre from oblivion.
