She was born on October 13, 1951 in the town of Helena, Arkansas, USA in the family of Jordan Bennett Lambert III, a farmer, owner of rice and cotton fields, and Martha Kelly. Her younger sister, Blanche Lincoln, is a Senator from Arkansas. Mary graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Mary Lambert's career began in 1977 when she directed the short film Rapid Eye Movements. After that, she directed the video clips of many famous performers, shot short films and television films. She directed her first feature film in 1987.
