Born August 27, 1964 in Sydney (Australia) .
He started his career as a wedding cameraman, then worked as an assistant director and editor for Australian television.
At the age of 26, he took the director's chair and directed the comedy "Rascals" with Phil Collins and Hugo Weaving. This tape was in the competition of the Cannes Film Festival in 1993. The second film brought him worldwide fame: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, starring Terence Stemp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce, became one of the most successful Australian films in several years, receiving national awards, BAFTA and Effie. Elliott's next film, the black comedy Welcome to Whoop Whoop, also premiered in Cannes in 1997.
In 1999, Elliott directed the thriller The Witness, starring Evan McGregor and Ashley Judd. This time the premiere takes place at the Venice Festival. Then there was a four-year hiatus, and Elliott returned with two projects at once: the musical Priscilla, which he directed on Broadway, and the film Easy Behavior, starring Jessica Bill, Ben Barnes, Colin Firth and Christine Scott Thomas.
